VML-Technologies win order to design and supply a 1.387sqm LED Media Façade for Europe’s tallest skyscraper in Moscow

MCT-News-032012/05/23   VML-Technologies, a highly specialised designer and supplier of high-end LED Media Façade solutions based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, has been awarded the prestigious contract to design and supply an LED Media Façade for the Mercury City Tower in Moscow Russia. The Mercury City Tower will become the tallest building in Europe, standing at over 330m high, and spanning 75 floors. The order follows on from the successful design and demonstration by VML Technologies of a range of dedicated Lattice LED strip prototypes and an integrated system mock-up earlier this year.

The LED Media Façade is planned to span 15 meters in height, spread over 4 floors at a height of 300 meters, and will consist of more than 6.000 custom designed VML Lattice LED strips which are integrated in the metal ventilation louvers covering the building façade, making it not only the highest LED Media Façade display in Europe, but also one of the largest, covering an area of 1.387sqm. The display will be wrapped around the whole tower and will be daylight visible from up to 5 km away, showing a mix of decorative features, promotions and information.

The design of the LED Media Façade system is particularly challenging for the design team both mechanically and electrically due to the harsh environmental conditions at 300m height in Moscow, where temperatures can fall to -40degC in the winter, and due to the requirement for accurate integration of LED strips in the ventilated façade elements, which feature a large number of access doors for building management units, spaced around the tower. The final LED Media Façade system requires 8 different ultra-high brightness VML Lattice LED strip models to accommodate the various access doors and oblique beams located on the building façade.

The Mercury City Tower is due for completion in late 2013.
