About us
Johan Muijderman and Geoff Lunn founded VML-Technologies in 2007, building on their extensive experience with LED video technology. Geoff’s journey began in 1992 when founding UK-based Invision Microsystem Ltd; the first company in the world to design and manufacture a LED video display, using amber LEDs since Red, Green, and Blue LEDs didn’t yet exist. Johan’s journey began in 1997 initiating, establishing and heading the start-up of the LED large displays activity within Royal Philips Electronics.
In 1999, Geoff joined Johan, then managing director of the Philips Vidiwall division as head of the R&D team. This partnership formed a strong team, combining passion, expertise and pioneering innovative spirit. After developing a full range of LED video display products and completion of hundreds of LED large display projects across the globe, it eventually led to the creation of VML-Technologies.

Turning buildings into icons
The making of the world largest LED sphere
The centrepiece of the EXPO 2017 exposition in Astana, Kazakhstan is the colossal LED sphere. It stands as a marvel of engineering and design. Designed by renowned American Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill architects, it holds the title of the largest spherical building in the world, rising nearly 100 meters high.
The vision for the pavilion’s lighting was equally ambitious: to illuminate all window mullions on both sides, creating a striking grid of horizontal and twisted, S-shaped vertical lines. VML-Technologies was entrusted with turning this vision into reality, from product and system design to final actual installation, system commissioning and show content creation.

Installation and commissioning
Our team of experienced project engineers support certified local installation partners, both off and on-site, every step of the way, ensuring that the installation is seamless. We create the necessary maps to assure every LED pixel is properly displayed, also often on a 3D surface with irregular shapes and angles, to prevent needless distortion of displayed content.

Media and content creation
Our Picturebox processing suite is fully independent but supportive of the myriad of solutions that are available, interfacing with whichever media server is best suited to your needs.
We support your media and content creation needs, employing from a wide selection of powerful tools to fully unlock the power of your LED media façade and engage with your audience. This typically requires a two-stage solution requiring scaling and rendering of content that is subsequently outputted to, and pixel mapped in the VML Picturebox.
A wide variety of tools can be used to enliven our media facades. Ranging from standalone players for content management and scheduling, to powerful media servers with full integration of advanced video mapping with real-time rendering and playback, 3D visualization, video synchronisation and advanced content management for large scale, complex productions or events. e.g. Pixera, Disguise, etc.

The VML-Technologies solution combines exceptional performance with simplicity, making it ideal for demanding video lighting applications. It supports a real-time video input frame rate of 50Hz or 60Hz, ensuring smooth and precise playback from input to output. With 16-bit resolution per colour and a total 48-bit RGB colour depth, it delivers outstanding greyscale and vibrant colour for high-performance video content.
Our proprietary Lattice™ protocol, specifically developed for video, enhances performance, reliability, and efficiency. The streamlined system architecture is designed for easy installation, cost reduction, and minimal use of components and controllers. Its intuitive tree-structured data stream begins with a single high-speed cable, which progressively branches into smaller streams to efficiently direct data to the LED strips. Supporting an unparalleled 1024 pixels per data connection, the system minimises wiring and simplifies overall system complexity.
Built with sustainability at its core, the VML-Technologies solution incorporates high-efficiency power supplies operating at 48V DC and AWG14 power cabling, ensuring optimal performance, reducing power loss, and minimising environmental impact.

Nichia SMD and DIP LEDs
VML-Technologies is committed to best in class system performance and solely uses Nichia LEDs. Both SMD and DIP models. VML sets itself apart by fully embracing Nichia lamp-type DIP LEDs, harnessing their unmatched power efficiency, exceptional brightness, and eco-friendly performance.
For many projects these LEDs feature precision oval lenses that optimise viewing angles, directing light efficiently to deliver more than double the brightness (nits) of SMD or COB packages, while reducing light pollution. By placing each LED chip in its own housing, the design improves cooling, extending the LED lifetime by up to 40% compared to SMD or COB alternatives.
Unlike SMD LEDs, which must operate at reduced peak brightness above 45°C, Nichia DIP LEDs maintain their brilliance even in high ambient temperatures. Highly durable and fully weatherproof, they are the ideal choice for long-lasting, high-performance, and sustainable applications.
