The Hague Tower is one of the most iconic landmarks in The Hague, Netherlands. VML-Technologies was commissioned by AAA Architecten, the building’s original architects, to design an integrated transparent LED media facade display for the top conservatory deck.
In close collaboration with the architect, a bespoke solution was developed to meet several key design criteria: maintaining high transparency for unobstructed views from public areas behind the glass façade, achieving sufficient brightness to penetrate the tinted glass, seamlessly integrating the LED fixtures behind the glass façade, and accommodating the rotating ventilation louvers embedded within the glass panels.
To address these challenges, two different lengths of high-brightness LED strips were crafted—one for the standard window frames and another for the rotating glass panel frames. The final design demanded meticulous attention to both external and internal aesthetics. All cables were hidden and framing and cable ducts were expertly integrated into the existing structure for a seamless appearance. The architect introduced an innovative solution for the placement of the system’s power units, which are prominently showcased as custom-built “power trees” within the building, adding an artistic touch to the interior. With a viewing distance exceeding 250 meters, the ultra-bright LED strips are spaced widely in a horizontal orientation, creating an elegant high-transparency Venetian blind effect. This design not only ensures functionality and visual impact but also reinforces The Hague Tower’s status as a blend of modern technology and architectural elegance.
