Mercury City Tower LED Media Façade lights up the Moscow skyline

MCT-News-012013/12/20  The Mercury City Tower, designed by veteran New York architect Frank Williams, is the tallest building in Europe, standing at a height of over 330m in the heart of the Moscow International Business Center "Moscow City". With a highly distinctive shape and façade cladding in reflective bronze coloured panels, the tower has become an icon of the Moscow skyline.

The tower now also boasts an enormous LED Media Façade display which encircles the top of the tower, punching out bright, vibrant images over the whole city during day time and night-time. The LED Media Façade spans 15 meters in height, spread over 4 floors at a height of 300 meters, and consist of more than 6.000 custom designed VML-Technologies Lattice LED strips which are integrated into the metal ventilation louvers covering the building façade, making it not only the highest LED Media Façade display in Europe, but also one of the largest, covering an area of 1.387sqm. The media façade is visible from up to 5km away, showing a mix of decorative features, promotions and information.

The development of the LED Media Façade system was challenging for the design team both mechanically and electrically due to the harsh environmental conditions and the required integration with the ventilated façade elements which feature a large number of access doors for building management units, spaced around the tower. The final LED Media Façade system required 8 different ultra-high brightness VML Lattice LED strip models to accommodate the various different shaped sections and doors in the façade.

Following placement of the order in the middle of 2012, the LED Media Façade system was partly pre-assembled in Eindhoven, The Netherlands and partly off-site in Russia. The physical on-site installation of the pre-assembled sections commenced spring 2013 and was completed during summer 2013. The assembly of the various doors and oblique sections and the entire system wiring was done on-site and was completed in November 2013.

The LED Media Façade system is controlled by the VML-Technologies Lattice PictureBox controller.
